Signage That Serves the Court and the Crowd — Pickle Palace, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

At the heart of the $81.5 million Kingston Yard development in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Pickle Palace reimagines entertainment with flair. Boasting 37,000 square feet over three vibrant stories, this dynamic venue includes indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, duckpin bowling, a rooftop pub, restaurant, and event spaces. From skyline-defining signage to quirky interior details, our team helped shape the Pickle Palace’s bold and whimsical brand through a full suite of architectural signage.

The Latitude team partnered early with the developers to realize their vision. We were honored that they entrusted us with their big ideas, and we were able to creatively plan, design, manufacture, and install every signage aspect of this beacon of entertainment.

Skyline Landmark: Four-Sided Scaffold Sign

One of the most iconic pieces of the project is the massive illuminated scaffold sign towering above the rooftop. Bold 42” tall channel letters are stacked to read “Pickle Palace” on all four sides. Each side of the letters measures 91"x178" and is installed three stories up on scaffolding specifically engineered for this application. This LED color-changing signage is a beacon visible across Cedar Rapids, redefining the city's skyline and instantly establishing brand presence. This type of signage took a unique team to ensure the design, engineering, and illumination hit all the marks.

Exterior Channel Letters: Strong First Impressions

Illuminated channel letter signage was installed at multiple entrances, offering both function and high-impact visibility. The letters complement the building’s mix of modern-industrial and vintage design with bright, clean lines that pop against the brick and metal facade. The channel letters were created with a thin illuminated line to replicate that “neon” look, but in a much more dependable way that stands out more during the daytime.

Look Up With Style

36" open channel letters make you look up and say 'ahhh.' The exposed incandescent LED bulbs to give the vintage look to these ceiling mounted letters in the duckpin bowling area.

Wayfinding With Personality

Wayfinding throughout the facility continues the vintage-modern aesthetic. A 78” tall T-mounted elevator sign, reminiscent of a historic theater marquee, adds charm while clearly guiding guests. A 40”x30” directory glows in retro style on each floor at the elevators, leading visitors to pickleball courts, event spaces, and the rooftop pub with playful clarity.

Details Matter: Experiential Graphics, ADA + Restroom Signage

Even the ADA restroom signs received custom design treatment, with gender icons crowned to reinforce the “palace” theme. Tactile lettering and Braille ensure compliance while maintaining a fun, thematic feel.

Project Impact

The Cone Properties team partnered with us in mid-2021. By partnering early, we had time to successfully and thoughtfully blend illuminated exterior identity, interior moments, and detailed wayfinding to deliver a cohesive visual experience that matched the space’s eclectic energy. Whether guests are entering for dinner, duckpin bowling, or a rooftop match, the signage ensures they feel like royalty from the moment they arrive.

About the Development

Kingston Yard is a mixed-use development featuring Big Grove Brewery, the Pickle Palace, and other upcoming retail and dining destinations. The entire development plays a key role in revitalizing downtown Cedar Rapids and boosting local entertainment and tourism.
